Antipsychotic-induced Hyperprolactinemia: Pathophysiology and Clinical Consequences
نویسنده
چکیده
Hyperprolactinemia is one of the major adverse effects of antipsychotic agents. Although it is predominantly associated with the use of conventional or typical agents, atypical agents also cause varying degrees of hyperprolactinemia. Clinical manifestations, which tend to be underrecognized, are the result of the direct action of prolactin on its target tissues and of the sequelae of hypogonadism secondary to hyperprolactinemia. Long-term consequences of hyperprolactinemia may be serious; therefore, physicians must be alert to the signs and symptoms of hyperprolactinemia when monitoring their patients. Hyperprolactinemia and CYP2D6, DRD2 and HTR2C genes polymorphism in patients with schizophrenia
Introduction: Hyperprolactinemia is a common serious side effect of antipsychotic medications that are currently used in the treatment of patients with schizophrenia. Pharmacogenetic approaches offer the possibility of identifying patient-specific biomarkers for predicting the risk of this side effect. We investigated a possible relationship between variants (SNPs) in genes for cytochrome 2D6 (...

INTRODUCTION The altered profiles of prolactin secretion in the anterior hypophysis, generated by pathological, pharmacological or toxicological causes, have special consequences on multiple functions in both genders. AREAS COVERED This selective review presents the main mechanisms controlling prolactin secretion, focusing on the interplay of various neurotransmitters or xenobiotics, but also...
متن کاملAntipsychotic-induced hyperprolactinemia.
Use of antipsychotic agents has been associated with hyperprolactinemia, or elevated prolactin levels; this hormonal abnormality can interfere with the functioning of reproductive, endocrine, and metabolic systems. As antipsychotic agents are increasingly used for both United States Food and Drug Administration-approved and nonapproved indications, many individuals are at risk for developing an...
متن کاملAntipsychotics and Hyperprolactinemia: Prevalence and Risk Factors
Hyperprolactinemia, a largely underestimated frequent endocrine disorder, may be due to various causes including different treatments. Antipsychotics, particularly, play a major role in its occurence. Ours Objectives are to estimate the prevalence of hyperprolactinemia among patients treated with a single antipsychotic and to specify the risk factors for its occurence. It’s a cross-sectional st...

Hyperprolactinemia is a common side effect of antipsychotic treatments. Existing alternatives to resolve this problem include decreasing the antipsychotic dose or switching to a different antipsychotic agent. Nevertheless, said modifications can sometimes lead to decompensation of the patient. We report a clinical case of a female patient in whom the combined treatment of 5 mg/day of aripiprazo...
